This report discusses the opportunities that the neurotechnology industry offers to Canada. The sector has reached an inflection point: long term growth trends, such as unmet global demand for improved products and sustained government funding of basic brain research, now outweigh the relatively higher costs of developing effective treatments. Global healthcare challenges necessitate a more complex collaborative R&D environment involving multidisciplinary teams from academia and various industry partners. Canada’s neuroscience research is world-class, ranking 5th in the world in the number of neuroscience citations; and such large-scale cross-disciplinary science is not new for Canadians. The time is ripe to transform Canadian scientific leadership in the sector into healthcare solutions for the world.
